The IGI lists places and dates of more than 285 million birth, marriage and christenings. Some dating as far back as the 1500's. While searching these records you may find duplicate entries. This is due to the fact that the information comes from both LDS members regarding their ancestors and from the extraction program. The extraction program information comes straight from microfilm of the original documents. So information may have slight differences and should be verified by the source documents.
The Ancestral File has been accumulated by genealogists from around the world. It contains more than 35 million names that are linked to pedigrees so you can view ancestors and descendants of an individual.
The PRF is a database that is continuously growing by the rate of approximately 1.2 million names per month. The information in this database comes from the Familysearch Internet Genealogy Services and is information gathered from other people’s family histories. It is similar to the Ancestral File since it contains pedigree and family group data. But it also contains notes and source documentation (which can vary in accuracy). Information should be considered secondary until you find actual documentation.
Though it may be a lot of fun to take a trip to Salt Lake City, you don’t have to go all the way there to view all of this information.
